Hello everyone! What I am going to talk about today is something that I have been wanting to share with everyone but I could never gather enough courage to do so. I was a little skeptical to talk about this more so because I knew it would be a huge task for me to explain this to my family. But today, I decided I couldn’t hide behind the doors of distance from the people who are important to me. Also I wanted to share my journey that I had started a few days. I wanted to share what I knowledge I have gathered from my research along with the progress that I have made. I am talking about my KETO journey. Yes! If you do not know what exactly that is, then keep on reading.

Firstly, let me tell you something very important. I have always been a fit girl. When I say fit I mean I always ate healthy food, homemade most of it and had a decent amount of stamina till I got married. That was about 2 years back. I had never really gone gymming before that but I was relatively active during college and work hours. After moving to the USA, I started gaining weight. and gained about 10 kgs in these last two years. I know I am not alone in this. I had heard similar stories from everyone I knew. Every girl who moved to the US from India told me that they also gained weight when they moved here. I really didn’t understand the real reason back then.

Though I would admit that since I am a huge foodie, eating and eating out became ‘my thing’ very quickly. We ate out a lot and I realized pretty soon that I needed to shed all that weight.

I remember feeling miserable. I had promised myself during childhood that I will never gain weight. That I would always maintain my BMI, if nothing else. But here I was. Gaining weight like there was no end! I felt miserable. Yes I said it again. I remained sad for the most part of the 1 and a half year that I have lived here. I hated looking at myself in the mirror. It would instantly spoil my mood and I started hiding behind people when it came to getting my pictures clicked. I would be grumpy and irritable to say the least.

So in a resolve to get back in shape, me and my husband tried everything. We have definitely gotten back into eating home cooked healthy food apart from 1-2 meals that we go out for. We joined the gym as well. But still, I wasn’t losing much weight. Though I would say that I had lost some weight. Still it wasn’t enough to satisfy me. I realized I had a long way to go.

Co-incidentally, I came across the KETO diet.

This post will be incomplete without me telling you a little about what that is. A keto diet is also called as ketogenic diet. It is a low carb, high fat diet which offers many health benefits. It involves drastically reducing the carbohydrate intake and replacing it with fat. The reduction in carbs puts your body in a metabolic state called ketosis. When this happens, your body becomes incredibly efficient in burning fat for energy. It turns fats into ketones which supply energy to the body.

This diet has been shown to lower blood glucose and insulin levels.

You are allowed to eat about 60-75% fats, moderate proteins and very less carbs. I have been counting my macros and eating only about 20 grams net carbs in a day. Net carbs = Total carbs – dietary fiber.

I have been following this since 20 days now. So far, I have experienced a huge increment in my overall energy through the day. I feel more energetic, less hungry. I am generally in a better mood.

Initially, I was very skeptical as to whether I would be able to follow it strictly. I love rice and food in general. I was scared whether those cravings would pull me to quit on this diet. I also wanted to research well and find out if this was a safe diet to follow. After calming my ever skeptical mind, I knew this was the right thing for me to do.

Another huge dilemma was how I would manage my food blog. After all, cutting out all carbs leaves me with not many options to cook. But after all these days, I have realized that there is a lot that can be cooked as per our Indian cuisine while being on keto! I feel more confident now regarding KETO safe food. And I will be sharing my recipes here soon!

Being on this diet doesn’t mean that I sit on a couch watching TV while eating keto. While exercising is not necessary, you may exercise as and when you want. And with all the extra energy that I have been experiencing, exercising/going for a run/ gym seems like an obvious investment of my time!

I feel better than ever and I have already lost 4 kgs since the day I started.

I am a happy goat!

I intend to share my journey with everyone. I will be sharing my recipes and what I eat in a day on keto in my upcoming posts.

Stay tuned! And if you have any questions, feel free to ask them in the comments section.

Till next time…

  • Waaw,.. thank you for this post,.. Even I gained alot of weight after I injured my knee while preparing for a marathon,. Now I cant exercise because of my complex tear of lateral meniscus. I was a runner and used to go gym almost every day. I used to love gymming. However, because I have complex muscle tear, which need to be operated, my doctor has advised me strictly not to exercise. I can do some minor exercises, which doesn’t require my knee support/movement. But whenever I start doing exercise, because of my knack, I end up doing rigorously and hurt my knee 🙂 I’m too lazy for diet, but now I don’t have any option left than diet. Please do share what you eat in a day on keto diet. Thank you,..

    • Absolutely Shilpa! I would be glad if I could be any help to you. I will be sharing what i eat in a day very soon.
